Daruma is a tumbler, which is made by craftsmen manually from paper (papier-mâché) and very rarely from wood, and has no arms and legs.
The symbols depicted on the doll are important: eyebrows are a crane, a beard is a turtle, they symbolize a long life.
The main color of the doll is red, because the monk Bodhidharma (after whom the doll was invented) wore a red robe.
Daruma helps to fulfill only one cherished desire a year, so people most often buy or give a doll for a birthday or New Year, when they want to start living from scratch or do a new business: open a business, get married, lay the foundation for a future home, save up for a trip…
